Xbox Series X and S reached 2 million sales in the UK quicker than Switch did

Xbox Series X and S have reportedly sold 2 million units in the UK.

Chart company GfK has revealed (via GamesIndustry.biz) that Microsoft‘s current-gen consoles took 128 weeks to hit the milestone.

GfK says this is actually faster than the Nintendo Switch, which sold relatively slowly out of the gates and took 140 weeks to reach 2 million UK sales.

It does also note, however, that the Xbox Series X and S are far from the fastest home consoles to reach that point – seven others have reached it faster.

In fact – in part due to stock shortages – the 128 weeks mean it’s taken Xbox Series X and S longer to reach 2 million than the Xbox 360 (110 weeks) and even the Xbox One (104 weeks).

It’s also slower than the PS5, which reached the milestone in 98 weeks (and was itself slower than two older generations – the PS4 in 75 weeks, and the PS2 in 60 weeks).

The fastest-selling console to hit 2 million sales in UK history remains the Wii, which hit the figure in just 57 weeks.

Despite hitting a key sales milestone in the UK, the country continues to be a thorn in Microsoft’s side thanks to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) blocking its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Last month the CMA prevented the deal from going ahead, citing concerns over its effect on competition in the cloud gaming market.

After months of investigation, the UK regulator published its final report, saying it had prevented it over concerns it would “alter the future of the fast-growing cloud gaming market, leading to reduced innovation and less choice for UK gamers over the years to come”.

Microsoft’s president Brad Smith said the company was “disappointed” by the CMA’s decision and said it would appeal, claiming the decision “appears to reflect a flawed understanding of this market and the way the relevant cloud technology actually works”.

The company has hired Daniel Beard KC, a “leading competition barrister” known for overturning a number of high-profile EU regulatory decisions, to represent it during the appeal process.
