Xbox is reportedly developing a ‘cross-platform user interface’
Microsoft is said to be working on cross-platform Xbox features inspired by Battle.net
Microsoft is reportedly working on a new cross-platform user interface.
That’s according to a Windows Central report, which also claims that exclusive Xbox console games will be the exception rather than the rule going forward.
“Sources tell us that Microsoft is also working on a set of in-game APIs and user interface features, called Project Rainway, which is some form of cross-platform Xbox guide menu,” the report claims.
“Microsoft has been inspired by the in-game Battle.net social features seen in Hearthstone, Diablo IV, and World of Warcraft, which lets you share and communicate cross-platform.
“This means that for games running on other platforms from Xbox, they will still have an Xbox flavor and in-game Xbox systems, maybe even cloud saves.”
Last week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reiterated that the company’s gaming strategy going forward is centred on allowing players to “enjoy Xbox on all devices.”
A recently launched marketing campaign is also designed to highlight the numerous ways Xbox games can be played.
The new slogan, “This is an Xbox“, consists of a humorous series of statements pointing out things that aren’t an Xbox – such as bento boxes and bus stops – as well as devices that can play Xbox games.
These include mobile phones, laptops, Amazon Fire TV sticks and the ROG Ally handheld.
