Xbox is letting players stream their gameplay directly to Discord
The feature is rolling out to some Insiders and “will be coming soon for everyone”
Xbox will soon let players stream their gameplay directly to Discord.
The feature is rolling out to Xbox Insider members on the Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha rings today, so they can test it and make sure it’s working properly.
Once testing is complete, Xbox will then roll out the feature to all owners – it says it “will be coming soon for everyone”.
According to a post on the official Xbox Wire blog, players will be able to stream games to their Discord friends by simply choosing the ‘stream your game’ option.
“To get started, you can join voice channels from your Discord servers directly from your Xbox console when your Discord account is linked,” the article explains.
“To try it, press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide, scroll to Parties & Chats, and select Discord. Then scroll through your available Discord servers and pick a voice channel and start streaming.
“We’re excited to hear your feedback as you try it out and just as excited for what the future holds for Xbox and Discord.”
Last year Microsoft added the ability to join Discord voice channels directly from an Xbox console.
Discord was founded in 2015 as a platform for video game players to chat while playing online. Today, it has over 150 million monthly users, with many communities dedicated to a range of topics related to gaming and beyond.
Microsoft was reportedly in talks to purchase Discord for around $10 billion in 2021. According to Bloomberg, the messaging platform turned down the offer in April 2021 to focus on a potential public listing in the long term.
Sony then announced in May 2021 that it had made a minority investment in Discord, which saw its platform connected with PlayStation consoles in 2022. This partnership wasn’t based on exclusivity, however, as the Xbox integration shows.
