World of Warcraft Classic ‘drove subscriber revenue growth of 223%’
SuperData also says Pokémon Go was the month’s top-grossing mobile game
World of Warcraft subscriber revenue in August 2019 was up 223% compared to July, driven by the launch of World of Warcraft Classic.
“Despite this, total revenue was still lower than the Battle for Azeroth expansion last August,” according to a new global market report from Nielsen’s SuperData.
The report also says Pokémon Go was the highest grossing mobile game in the world in August.
The title, which has been downloaded over one billion times since it launched in July 2016, generated an estimated $176 million in August, marking its highest earning month in three years.
SuperData said worldwide digital gaming revenue in August increased 2% year-over-year to $8.9 billion, with mobile accounting for 62% of the total, compared to 57% in August 2018.
Dungeon Fighter Online and Fortnite were the top-grossing PC and console titles respectively last month.
Shares of Activision Blizzard hit a nine-month high in August following World of Warcraft Classic’s release.
In September, World of Warcraft Classic was hit by a series of distributed denial of service attacks, leading to unscheduled service downtime.
