Walking Dead creator aims to turn The Callisto Protocol into a multimedia franchise

Striking Distance has partnered with Skybound Entertainment, the company behind The Walking Dead franchise, to expand upcoming horror title The Callisto Protocol beyond video games.

Revealed at The Game Awards in December, The Callisto Protocol is a story-driven survival horror game set in a prison colony on Jupiter’s moon Callisto in the year 2320.

Set for release in 2022, it’s the brainchild of Dead Space creator Glen Schofield, the former Sledgehammer Games and Visceral Games general manager who was appointed CEO of new PUBG Corporation development studio Striking Distance in 2019.

At the time, he said PUBG Corporation was keen to expand the series beyond battle royale and that he was planning to craft “an original narrative experience in the PUBG universe”.

Schofield has been building Striking Distance from the ground up and it now has over 150 employees, including former Dead Space and Call of Duty developers.

Striking Distance Studios has one goal with The Callisto Protocol – to make one of the most terrifying games of all time,” he said.

Robert Kirkman, chairman of Skybound Entertainment and creator of The Walking Dead, said of the partnership: “Through Skybound, The Walking Dead has expanded from its original comic book to multiple television series, books, video games, merchandise, and more, and we can’t wait to explore similar possibilities for The Callisto Protocol with Skybound’s multiplatform expertise.”
