Ubisoft says it will reveal a ‘brand new’ Tom Clancy game on Monday
UPDATE: XDefiant is a free-to-play shooter combining multiple properties
Ubisoft will reveal a “brand new” game set in the Tom Clancy’s universe tomorrow, Monday July 19, it’s announced.
“Tune in at 11AM PT / 8PM CEST for the worldwide reveal of a brand-new game in the Tom Clancy’s universe,” the publisher said on Sunday.
The game could potentially be the new multiplayer PvP title codenamed ‘BattleCat’ which leaked on social media last month.
UPDATE 19/07/21: Ubisoft has revealed a free-to-play FPS called Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. Blending 6-v-6 arena combat with faction-based abilities, it combines elements of the Splinter Cell, Ghost Reckon and The Division games, with more properties to follow.
ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: VGC understands that ‘BattleCat’ is a first-person shooter targeting consoles and PC, which is currently in the early stages of development.
On Sunday, publication IGN posted a short gameplay clip of the unannounced title:
According to leaked marketing documents, ‘BattleCat’ combines the Splinter Cell, Ghost Reckon: Breakpoint and Division games into a single Tom Clancy multiplayer title. Recent leaked images show Splinter Cell’s Echelon as playable characters, as well Breakpoint’s Wolves and The Division’s Cleaners and Outcasts.
Each character class has its own unique ability, the images claim, such as Echelon’s radar stealth and Wolves’ additional armour, as well as an ultimate ability such Outcasts’ Divine Intervention, which stops nearby allies dying for a limited time.
Ubisoft previously combined its Tom Clancy properties with mobile game Elite Squad, a free-to-play RPG shooter released last year, in which players assemble and upgrade heroes and villains from Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and more.
Ubisoft recently said it’s planning to release “high quality free-to-play games across all our biggest franchises across all platforms”, although it later said this “does not mean” it will release less premium games.
In May the publisher announced Heartland, a separate the free-to-play Division spin-off, described as “a standalone experience” that will provide “an all new perspective on the universe in a new setting.”
