Ubisoft quietly launches ‘web3 competitive turn-based RPG’

Ubisoft has launched a “Web3 competitive Turn-Based RPG”, several years after it faced criticism for backing NFTs.

The new game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, launched on PC last week. The game sees players assemble groups of three characters in order to battle against enemies in turn-based combat.

The game’s Web3 functionality is that each of these characters essentially functions as NFTs, and can be purchased with in-game or cryptocurrency.

NFTs are unique non-interchangeable units of data stored on a blockchain (a form of digital ledger), which effectively allow users to buy and sell digital products like in-game items or artwork.

NFTs continue to be a contentious issue with some due to the format’s high carbon footprint and what many perceive to be cynical implementation.

While Ubisoft’s game is free to download, players must have a valid blockchain wallet associated with their account to play Champions Tactics, even if they don’t plan to use cryptocurrency.

Ubisoft previously attempted to introduce Web3 functionality to its games with Ubisoft Quartz, a short-lived NFT platform that would reward players with digital items that could be sold or exchanged.

At the time, a Ubisoft executive stated that the company would proceed with its NFT plans, controversially claiming players just “don’t get it.”

Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab VP Nicolas Pouard told Australian financial site Finder: “Well, it was a reaction we were expecting. We know it’s not an easy concept to grasp. But Quartz is really just a first step that should lead to something bigger. Something that will be more easily understood by our players.”

Champions Tactics is currently available on PC, where it is rated Adults Only due to its inclusion of cryptocurrency. The game has yet to be rated by the ESRB.

When asked about this Ubisoft provided the following statement to IGN:

“The team inside the Ubisoft Paris studio developing Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles partnered with Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab and Oasys to ensure that our use of blockchain was done in service of delivering new and innovative gaming experiences for our players,” the publisher said.

“Our shared goal is to explore new ways to play alongside bringing more value to players based on empowerment and ownership. Champions Tactics offers deep strategic gameplay featuring unique in-game assets and several exciting innovations. These include millions of procedurally generated figurines, each with distinct stats, assets shaped directly by players’ choices, and an open marketplace letting players compose their teams on a peer-to-peer basis —much like a physical trading card game.

“For months, we have collaborated closely with our community through events and beta phases to build and refine Champions Tactics. We’re excited to keep expanding and enhancing the experience together.”
