Three more Mega Drive / Genesis games have been added to Switch Online
Alien Soldier, Light Crusader and Super Fantasy Zone join the collection
Three more games have been added to the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis library on Nintendo Switch Online.
The library, which can only be accessed by players who are subscribed to the Expansion Pass tier of Switch Online, launched in October 2021 and has only had one update until now.
This changes today with the addition of three more games:
- Alien Soldier
- Light Crusader
- Super Fantasy Zone
Alien Solider is arguably the most interesting of the three games added, because it was developed by cult favourite action game studio Treasure and was never physically released in North America. It’s a side-scrolling run and gun title which is infamously difficult because it focuses mainly on lengthy but rewarding boss battles.
Light Crusader, which was also developed by Treasure, is an isometric action-adventure game similar to Sega‘s Landstalker. The player controls Sir David, as he explores a huge dungeon underneath the town of Green Row in an attempt to find its missing townspeople.
Finally, Super Fantasy Zone is the final game in Sega’s Fantasy Zone series. The game stars the company’s former mascot, a colourful anthropomorphic spaceship called Opa-Opa, as he tries to avenge his father’s death by clearing the Fantasy Zone of evil.
The three new additions bring the total number of Mega Drive / Genesis games on Switch Online to 22 titles.
The service launched with 14 titles, and a further five were added in December – Altered Beast, Dynamite Headdy, Sword of Vermillion, Thunder Force II and ToeJam & Earl.
The Expansion Pack adds Mega Drive and Nintendo 64 games to the existing NES and SNES libraries available as part of the standard Switch Online membership.
Players can also buy a separate Mega Drive controller that connects to the Switch for a more faithful recreation.
In North America and Europe, the controller is the standard three-button design that was included with the console when it originally launched.
Japan, meanwhile, gets the improved six-button controller that was released in 1993 to coincide with the release of Street Fighter II’: Special Champion Edition.
