The Xbox PC app will soon let players choose and browse install folders

The news opens up the possibility of easier modding of Xbox titles

The Xbox app will soon give players more options when choosing where to install their games.

The Verge reports that Microsoft is working on an update to the Xbox app which will give players similar install options to Steam and some other game launchers.

Currently players are able to change which drive their games install to by default by going to the Settings menu on the PC Xbox app.

At the moment games are installed to a WindowsApps folder, which is restricted to players. However, the new update will also let players specify exactly which folder they want to install a game to.

This will then allow them to browse and modify the contents of these folders once a game has been installed.

“With great PC games like Back 4 Blood, Age of Empires IV, Forza Horizon 5, and Halo Infinite on day one with Game Pass, we wanted to provide players with more options to customize their experience in the Xbox app,” Jason Beaumont, partner director of experiences at Xbox, told The Verge in a statement. “We’ll continue to share updates as we launch additional features.”

The ability to access game folders opens up the possibility of being able to create mods for Xbox and Game Pass titles, though this has yet to be confirmed.

An update to the PC Xbox app in September let Windows 10 PC users stream Xbox Game Pass titles from the cloud, and stream games from their home consoles.

Xbox Cloud Gaming on Windows PCs through the Xbox app was first made available in August for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers signed up to the Xbox Insider programme. It’s now available to all Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members in 22 countries.
