The Switch has overtaken the Wii in lifetime sales in the US
It’s now right behind the Xbox 360 in the country
The Nintendo Switch‘s lifetime sales have now overtaken those of the Wii in the United States.
As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Circana (formerly the NPD Group) has revealed that the Switch overtook the Wii in the US during July 2023.
It’s now reportedly less than a million units behind the Xbox 360‘s lifetime sales in the US, and less than 5 million behind those of the PS2.
The Switch had already overtaken the Wii in terms of global sales back in February 2022, when it passed the Wii’s lifetime total of 101.63 million.
The Wii was exceptionally popular in North America, however, with at least 48 million of those sales taking place in that region. As such, it’s taken the Switch longer to overtake it in the US.
During its latest quarterly financial results briefing earlier this month, Nintendo said the Switch’s global lifetime sales stood at 129.53 million by the end of June 2023.
Driven by the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo shipped 3.91m Switch units during the three-month period between April and June 2023, which was up 13.9% year-on-year.

Nintendo forecasts it will sell 15 million consoles during the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, which represents a 16.5% decline, as Switch enters a significant slowdown during its seventh year on the market.
According to VGC sources, the company has dispatched Switch 2 development kits to key partners, with a launch planned for the second half of 2024. Officially, the company is yet to comment on plans for its next console.
