The Super Mario Bros Movie’s second trailer is here
The new trailer shows a Donkey Kong fight and a Mario Kart scene
Nintendo and Illumination have premiered the second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The new trailer was shown during a special Nintendo Direct on Tuesday.
Trailer 2 opens with Mario fighting Donkey Kong, and lets fans hear the voices of Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Luigi (Charlie Day) for the first time. It also shows a racing scene inspired by Mario Kart.
Introducing the trailer, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said of Taylor-Joy: “It was important for us to work with performers who could inhabit a wide range of emotions to connect with audiences on the big screen.
“Anya brings another dimension to this character, whether she’s leading her Toads or going head-to-head against the King of the Koopas.”
Before the trailer aired, Nintendo also shared a message from Seth Rogen, who plays Donkey Kong in the movie.
“For my entire life, I’ve been a fan of the worlds created by Miyamoto-san,” he said. “In fact, my dog is named Zelda.
“Ever since I was a kid playing PlayChoice-10 I remember looking at Mario Bros and thinking: ‘If they ever make a movie out of this, I better be in it.’ And I’m happy to say that dream came true. I thank you, and Zelda does too.”
Promotional images for the movie leaked earlier on Tuesday, along with fresh details about the film.
These included an image of Mario and Luigi in the real world, with a street sign saying ‘Brooklyn’, implying that some of the older Mario lore from the ’80s and ’90s is returning.
The leak also added an apparent synopsis of the movie’s story. It reads: “The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the ‘let’s-a-go’ attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere.”
It adds: “We open with the Super Mario Brothers reckoning with their struggling plumbing business, and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through the Mushroom Kingdom. Through their journey, we meet a cast of familiar, loveable characters, ultimately uniting together to defeat the power-hungry villain, Bowser.”
The film’s first trailer gave fans the first chance to hear Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is due to be released in North America on April 7, 2023.
