Legendary Entertainment has purchased the film and TV rights to the Street Fighter series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong production company will work with Street Fighter owner Capcom on future adaptations.

The beat ‘em up series, which celebrated its 35th anniversary last year, had sold 49 million units as of December 2022, according to its Japanese publisher.

The franchise has received various media adaptations, including two live action movies that were commercial and critical misfires.

Street Fighter was released in 1994 and starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, the late Raúl Juliá as General M. Bison and Kylie Minogue as Cammy.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li followed in 2009 and starred Kristin Kreuk in the title role.

The next game in the series, Street Fighter 6, will be released on June 2 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S and Steam, with a launch roster of 18 characters.

One of its more notable new features is World Tour mode, which will let players create their own character, explore a series of open-world areas and learn moves from existing Street Fighter warriors.

A Deluxe Edition of the game will include four additional characters, four extra characters’ colours and 4,200 Drive Tickets, which can be used to customise fighters via an in-game store.

The Ultimate Edition also adds a further eight characters’ outfits, two more stages, and an extra 3,500 Drive Tickets.

Capcom‘s share price hit an all-time high today. The company, which most recently released a Resident Evil 4 remake, said in January that it was on course to sell more games in a fiscal year than in any other in its history.
