The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie has its first teaser
Paramount film will premiere in cinemas in April 2022, with original director Jeff Fowler on board
Paramount Pictures has released the first teaser for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which it says will premiere in cinemas on April 8, 2022.
The teaser features nods to the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game, including sidekick Tails’ twin appendages and the theme music from the Emerald Hill Zone.
The original live action film sees Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and his best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to save the planet from evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
It went on to gross $146 million in the US and $306 million worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing film of 2020, according to Box Office Mojo. However, its run at cinemas was cut short when venues were shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following the closures, Paramount chose to release Sonic the Hedgehog digitally on March 31, little more than 40 days after it debuted in cinemas on Valentine’s Day.
Variety first reported in May 2020 that Jeff Fowler was returning to direct the sequel, and reteaming with the first film’s scriptwriters, Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
Publisher Sega previously promised to mark Sonic’s 30th anniversary this year with the release of new games and some major announcements.
On Monday, the company claimed that over 1.14 billion Sonic game units have been sold and downloaded since the series debuted in 1991.
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka announced at SXSW Gaming 2019 that production on the next major Sonic the Hedgehog title was underway.
Earlier this month Netflix announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog 3D animated series. Titled Sonic Prime, the 24-episode family-friendly series will premiere worldwide in 2022.
It’s billed as “a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse” rests in Sonic’s hands, as well as “a journey of self-discovery and redemption”.
