The original Japanese version of The Ring is coming to Dead by Daylight

The next iconic horror series to be featured in Dead by Daylight will be Ringu, it’s been announced.

A new chapter coming to the game next year will be inspired by the original Japanese novel written by Kōji Suzuki, and its subsequent 1998 Japanese film.

Ringu was adapted for western audiences with The Ring, the 2001 film starring Naomi Watts, in which she tried to uncover the mystery of a cursed video tape and the death of a young girl called Samara.

Given that Dead by Daylight is specifically based on the original story, however, it’s likely that the new villain will be Sadako, Samara’s Japanese equivalent.

The Ringu chapter, which will be the game’s 23rd, will be released in March 2022 and will mark the start of the game’s seventh year of content.

While many of the game’s chapters introduce new original killers and survivors, some of them are based on licensed properties.

Last year’s two licensed chapters were based on Hellraiser and Resident Evil. The former introduced Pinhead as a killer, while the latter added Leon and Jill as survivors and Nemesis as a killer.

Previous DLC has included Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Leatherface, the Pighead killer from Saw, the Demogorgon from Stranger Things and Pyramid Head from Silent Hill.

While this is the first major licensed appearance of Sadako in a video game, there was a spin-off game based on the original Japanese novel released on the Dreamcast.

The Ring: Terror’s Realm was a survival horror game released in 2000 and the North American version was notorious for its terrible voice acting, especially during its intro.
