The original Call of Duty Warzone will shut down on Thursday

Activision will shut down the original Call of Duty Warzone this Thursday, September 21.

The free-to-play battle royale game launched in March 2020 and was a smash hit, attracting over 100 million players in 13 months, according to its publisher.

It went offline for a couple of weeks in November 2022 so that Activision could focus on the launch of its successor, which was at the time called Warzone 2.0 but has since dropped the numbers from its title.

The original Warzone was then relaunched in the form of the stripped back Warzone Caldera, named after its World War 2-themed island map, which had replaced its launch map, Verdansk.

Caldera players were able to access all the skins and weapons they’d purchased or unlocked across three premium Call of Duty titles, which aren’t compatible with the new Warzone.

Activision announced in June that it planned to end support for the game this month in order to focus on other Call of Duty content.

Following Caldera’s closure, players will be able to access their purchased content in Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard multiplayer modes.

Thie year’s Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 3, is a direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare 2. Set for release on November 10, 2023, development is being led by Sledgehammer, in collaboration with Infinity Ward, while Treyarch is heading up its Zombies mode.
