The original 1997 PC port of Resident Evil is now on GOG, with 2 and 3 coming soon

The original 1996 version of Resident Evil is now available to buy on GOG.

Although it was ported to PC in 1997, the original Resident Evil has not been not widely available for purchase on modern PC storefronts. On Steam, currently none of the original Resident Evil games are available to buy.

However, that 1997 PC port – as opposed to the remake which was originally released on GameCube before being ported to HD platforms – can now be purchased from the GOG store, priced at £8.99 / $9.99.

GOG says it will also be bringing the original PC versions of Resident Evil 2 and 3 to the store later this year.

Players who intend to buy all three can purchase a bundle for £20.99 / $24.99. This makes the original Resident Evil available now, and makes the second and third games available once they’re released.

The new GOG release of Resident Evil is based on the 1997 PC port of the game, but has been updated to ensure full compatibility with Windows 10 and 11.

The game includes new rendering options and various modern fixes such as improved cutscene timing, an improved video player, an improved DirectX game renderer and issue-free game exit.

It also offers full support for modern controllers, including Xbox Series, Xbox One, Xbox 360, DualSense, DualShock 4, Switch, Logitech F series and more.

When it’s released later this year, the GOG port of Resident Evil 2 will also include similar improvements, and will unlock the 4th Survivor and Tofu modes from the beginning.

The eventual release of Resident Evil 3, meanwhile, will include Mercenaries mode.
