The Mortal Kombat 2 movie has been given a 2025 release date

Warner Bros has announced the release date for its upcoming movie Mortal Kombat 2.

The sequel to the 2021 live-action film will be released in cinemas on October 24, 2025, including an IMAX version, Variety reports.

It was first announced back in January 2022 that Mortal Kombat 2 was in the works, following the success of the previous year’s movie.

2021’s Mortal Kombat film was helmed by Simon McQuoid, making his feature directorial debut, and produced by James Wan (Aquaman), Todd Garner (Into the Storm), E. Bennett Walsh (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and McQuoid.

It released in April and helped drive what was then the US box office’s biggest weekend since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, generating $22.5 million in its opening weekend and reportedly exceeding Warner Bros’ expectations.

The sequel will be directed by McQuoid again, and has been penned by Fantastic 4 and Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater.

The film will star Karl Urban (The Boys) as Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Kitana, neither of whom were in the first movie.

They will be joined by the retuning Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Mehcad Brooks (Jax) and Ludi Lin (Liu Kang).

In 2021, McQuoid said that Johnny Cage wasn’t included in the first movie was because he would “throw it out of balance slightly”, explaining that “he’s such a giant personality that he almost has his own gravitational field”.

“I get asked about Kitana just as much as Johnny Cage,” he added at the time. “There’s a lot of interesting characters, story and material to work with.”
