UPDATE: Naughty Dog has officially announced its The Last of Us PS5 remake.

ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: “The Last of Us Part I includes the complete The Last of Us single-player story (PS5) and celebrated prequel chapter, Left Behind.”

The game will be released for PS5 on September 2, 2022, and the trailer confirms it’s in development for PC too.

Bloomberg first reported last April that a remake of 2013’s PS3 game The Last of Us was in the works for PS5.

It claimed the project was originally in development at PlayStation’s Visual Arts Service Group before the studio was switched to a support role on the game.

The remake’s development is now being led by series creator Naughty Dog, which is said to have taken charge of the project following the completion of The Last of Us Part 2, which was released in June 2020.

It was first claimed in January that the Last of Us remake was nearly finished and could be released for PS5 in the second half of 2022, and VGC had also heard from our own sources that the game was nearing completion.

Earlier this month, a new Twitter user calling themself ‘The Snitch’ seemingly leaked the contents of Sony’s State of Play presentation as well as the existence of what’s claimed to be Hideo Kojima’s new horror game Overdose.

The account’s third tweet to date was a cryptic message posted on Wednesday. “PART 1 – 02.09.2022” it reads, followed by emojis for a video game controller and a PC.

Given that Naughty Dog’s most recent release was The Last of Us: Part 2, the prevailing theory was that Part 1 referred to a Last of Us remake, which has now been proved accurate.
