The Last of Us is one of HBO Max’s most streamed shows ever
Only Game of Thrones’ final two seasons received more overall viewership
HBO’s The Last of Us is one of the company’s most streamed shows ever.
According to Warner Bros Discovery’s recent financial results, the show reached over 30 million users on HBO Max. It’s also the most-watched show in Europe and Latin America for the service.
It’s worth noting that the HBO Max service isn’t available in the UK, where the show is broadcast by Sky, meaning the overall numbers are likely much larger.
The only shows to receive higher viewership on the platform are the seventh and eighth seasons of Game of Thrones.
HBO announced that The Last of Us had been renewed for a second season just two and a half weeks into the first season’s nine-episode run, which concluded in March.
Earlier this year, producers Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann seemingly confirmed their intention to make a third season too, by suggesting that Season 2 wouldn’t be able to contain the entirety of The Last of Us Part 2 game.
Fans may have to wait a couple of years to find out what happens in Season 2, Ramsey suggested during an interview last month.
“It will be a while,” she said when asked when the second season might air. “I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next. And then it’s a long, it’s like a year filming, so it will be probably the end of 2024, early 2025.”
The first season of the show will be released physically this summer.
All nine episodes will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on July 18.
The 4K Ultra HD version will be priced at $50 / £40, the Blu-ray will be $45 / £30 and the DVD will be $40 / £25.
Amazon UK already has all three formats up for pre-order, along with a £50 Steelbook 4K UHD version. It’s not yet known if the steelbook is exclusive to Amazon, or whether it will also be available in North America.
