Tales series character designer Mutsumi Inomata has died aged 63

Mutsumi Inomata, the illustrator known for her work on the Tales series of games by Bandai Namco, has passed away at the age of 63.

Inomata worked on 12 games in the Tales series, and was character designer on such titles as Tales of Verseria, Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Xillia 1 and 2, Tales of Graces f, Tales of the Tempest and Tales of Destiny 1 and 2.

She also worked as a character designer and animation director on numerous anime movies and series over the years, including Windaria, City Hunter, Future GPX Cyber Formula and Plawres Sanshirou.

A note published on Inomata’s official X account, written by her sister, confirmed her death.

“Mutsumi Inomata passed away on March 10, 2024,” the message reads. “It happened so suddenly. She still has rough drafts, which I’m sure are still being worked on in heaven. Surrounded by her favourite cats, she’s surely creating more cute, strong-eyed characters.

“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who loved and supported Mutsumi. We hope that in the future you will continue to love her as you did.

“The funeral service was conducted by close relatives only. In accordance with her wishes before her death, we decline all condolences, incense, offerings, floral tributes and other expressions of sympathy. We appreciate your kind understanding.”

In a separate message, she added, “It really happened so suddenly that I still can’t think of many things. I plan on keeping this account open for a while. If you could reply with a message, I’m sure it will reach my sister.”
