Nintendo Switch led hardware unit sales in the US in July 2021 as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword topped the monthly software chart.

While PS5 led the hardware market in dollar sales last month, Switch is the best-selling platform year-to-date in both unit and dollar sales, according to market research firm the NPD Group.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said hardware sales were up 98 percent year-over-year to $323 million, marking the highest July total since 2008 and the third-highest July total ever.

Zelda: Skyward Sword topped the software chart ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which is the best-selling game year-to-date, and fellow new entry Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin.

Launch month sales of the Switch exclusive Wings of Ruin more than tripled the lifetime sales of Monster Hunter Stories, which released for Nintendo 3DS in 2017.

Piscatella also said MLB The Show 21 has overtaken Resident Evil: Village to become the second best-selling game of 2021.

Monthly content sales were up $232 million compared to July 2020, driven by an increase in mobile, subscription and post-launch content spending.
