Switch 2’s reveal confirms a mysterious new Joy-Con button, but what is it?

Nintendo has confirmed a new ‘C’ button on Switch 2 and appeared to tease mouse controls, but full details on both remain unclear.

During its official Switch 2 reveal video, which showed the Switch‘s successor for the first time, Nintendo showed numerous shots of the full console.

This included the presence of an extra button on the right Joy-Con, which had been previously been described as a C button in various leaks (many of which came from third-party peripheral manufacturers).

However, in Nintendo’s official video, the button has no markings on it whatsoever, even though previous ‘leaked’ renders showed a letter C.

It could be that the button will still have a C on it and Nintendo is saving that detail for its Nintendo Direct presentation on Switch 2, which is set to take place on April 2.

Recent speculation suggests the C button will be responsible for some sort of community-based functionality such as voice chat, but Nintendo’s trailer confirms nothing.

The right Joy-Con on Switch 2 has a new button but it’s still not clear what it does.

Also teased but not fully explored is the apparent presence of mouse controls on Switch 2’s Joy-Cons.

Nintendo’s trailer appears to show the Joy-Cons attaching to grips then sliding across the ground, much like a mouse would, before detaching from their grips and attaching to the Switch 2 console.

This lends further credence to previous reports that at least one of the new Joy-Con controllers has an optical sensor in it, similar to the one used by most optical mice.

It appears, then, that Switch 2’s Joy-Cons may indeed support mouse controls, but none of this can be truly confirmed until Nintendo reveals the full details, most likely during its April 2 Direct.
