Super Mario RPG’s original composer is returning for the remake

The original composer of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is returning to handle the music for its remake.

Yoko Shimomura was the composer of the SNES original when it was released in 1996.

Now, 27 years later, she will handle the game’s soundtrack once again with newly arranged versions of each piece of music.

“I am in charge of the music for the remake version of Super Mario RPG announced at the Nintendo Direct today,” Shimomura wrote on Twitter (as translated by Google).

“I put all my heart into arranging all the songs, hoping that both the fans of the original and those playing for the first time can enjoy it. Stay tuned for more news.”

Shimomura is considered something of a legend in the world of video game soundtracks, having composed the music to a number of iconic games.

As well as Super Mario RPG, Shimomura also composed the music for Street Fighter II, the Kingdom Hearts series, the Mario & Luigi series and Legend of Mana.

Most recently, she worked on the soundtrack for Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope alongside Grant Kirkhope and Gareth Coker.

The original Super Mario RPG was developed by Square and published by Nintendo for the SNES in 1996. The game follows Mario and his crew as they seek to defeat Smithy, who has crashed into their world and stolen the seven pieces of Star Road. The game features turn-based combat, and encounters are typically battled with parties of up to three characters.
