Super Mario Bros Wonder is the next 2D Mario game
It’s the first original 2D Mario side-scroller game in more than a decade
Nintendo has revealed a new 2D side-scrolling Super Mario game.
Super Mario Bros Wonder was revealed during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, and will be released on October 20.
The game’s new gimmick is the Wonder Flower, which transforms each stage in a different way. It also showed a new elephant-shaped fruit which turns Mario into an elephant.
The game will allow local co-op for up to four players, and will feature a selection of characters to choose from, “including” Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi and Daisy (suggesting more may be unlockable”.
“Super Mario Bros Wonder, the next evolution of 2D side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. games is headed to Nintendo Switch,” reads Nintendo’s description of the game.
“When you touch a Wonder Flower in the game, the wonders of the world unlock – pipes could come alive, hordes of enemies may appear, characters might change their looks, for example – transforming the gameplay in unpredictable ways. Excitement and different surprises await in each course.
“Super Mario Bros. Wonder features Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Yoshi as playable characters, in addition to familiar characters like Mario, Luigi and Toad.
“Plus, Super Mario Bros. Wonder sees the debut of Mario’s newest power-up, which allows him to transform into Elephant Mario! What other wonders could this game contain? More details will be shared at a later time, so please look forward to it.”
The last completely original 2D Mario game was New Super Mario Bros U, released in 2012.
The game was ported to Switch as New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe in 2019.
