Star Wars Outlaws devs discuss world building in behind the scenes video

Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games have released a new behind the scenes video for Star Wars Outlaws, which is viewable below.

Announced in June and developed by Ubisoft Massive, the open world game is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

It follows the story of Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix.

“The most exciting thing is being able to go back to iconic locations that people know and love, but then diving into the Lucasfilm archives and really bringing them alive in a new but very genuine way,” says Marthe Jonkers, associate art director at Massive.

“It’s not just about recreating Tatooine as you know it,” adds art and world director Benedikt Podlesnigg. “Going back to the classic sources of spaghetti westerns, we try to recreate an authentic mood and feel as we build new points of interest to follow the already established history.”

In a recent interview, Star Wars Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty said its in-game planets might be equivalent to the size of two or three zones in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

He also said all planets and locations are being “handcrafted,” meaning “we haven’t procedurally generated an entire planet.”

This includes a new location called Toshara, which has “been built from the ground up with the scoundrel fantasy at its beating heart”, according to Steve Blank, Lucasfilm’s franchise content and strategy director.

Star Wars Outlaws is scheduled for release in 2024 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC through Ubisoft Connect.
