Star Fox artist says he wants GameCube title Star Fox Assault to be playable on Switch 2

The original artist behind Star Fox says he hopes Star Fox Assault will be ported to Switch 2.

The GameCube action game celebrates its 20th anniversary this week, so former Nintendo artist Takaya Imamura posted a sketch on X asking for both it and Steel Diver Sub Wars (which turns 9 this week) to be available on Nintendo’s next console.

Imamura left Nintendo in 2021 after three decades, having worked on such titles as F-Zero, Star Fox and numerous Zelda games including A Link to the Past and Majora’s Mask. He’s credited as having designed the Starfox characters Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi and more, as well as Captain Falcon from F-Zero and Tingle.

His latest illustration shows Fox McCloud holding a submarine, saying: “Today is the release anniversary of Star Fox Assault and Steel Diver Sub Wars! I hope both will be playable on the Switch 2!”

Despite being based on a Nintendo IP, Star Fox Assault was developed by Namco and has players flying an Arwing, driving a Landmaster tank and taking on some missions on foot. It was met with mixed reviews, with most criticising the ground stages.

This isn’t the first time Imamura has asked for a Star Fox game to be re-released on modern hardware.

In 2022, on the 6th anniversary of Star Fox Zero, Imamura posted another tweet saying he hoped the Wii U exclusive would get a Switch port one day.

“Dear Nintendo… today, six years have passed since the release of Star Fox Zero,” he wrote at the time. “We know there are challenges to overcome, but please port the game to the Switch.”

Imamura’s next game, Omega 6: The Triangle Stars, will be getting an English language release on February 28.

The game is a retro-style adventure game based on a manga created by Imamura.
