Square Enix’s Project Athia confirmed as a two-year PS5 console exclusive
Original IP won’t release for Xbox until at least 24 months after PS5, marketing reveals
Square Enix’s PS5 and PC original IP Project Athia (working title) won’t release for Xbox Series X/S until at least 2 years after its release.
That’s according to a new marketing video from Sony highlighting upcoming PS5 releases, which states that the game will “not [be] available on other consoles until at least 24 months after release”.
Athia is the debut title from the Japanese publisher’s new Luminous Productions studio, a developer formed by members of the Final Fantasy XV team in 2018.
The original title is described as a “story-led” and “otherworldly adventure”, with a writing team led by Rogue One’s Gary Whitta.
A teaser trailer aired during this summer’s PS5 software reveal showcase featured a mixture of environmental traversal and combat.
“In a world not her own, where resolve will be tested, truths will be questioned and devotions will be doubted, she will rise,” it said.
Square Enix later said that Project Athia would “harness the full power of the [PS5] console and demonstrates Luminous Productions’ philosophy to provide a gaming experience like never before, fusing together the latest technology with art.”
Another PS5 exclusive from Square Enix, Final Fantasy 16, was announced in September.
Final Fantasy 16 is being directed by Hiroshi Takai, the designer who performed the same role for Final Fantasy XIV and The Last Remnant.
Although no official release timing has been shared, according to one journalist Final Fantasy 16 is “coming sooner than people think” as the game has been in development for “at least” four years.
