Square Enix ‘working on nailing down’ Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s release date
“Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan,” says producer Yoshinori Kitase
Square Enix has provided a development and release date update for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
The second entry in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy was announced in June 2022.
At the time, Final Fantasy 7 remake series producer Yoshinori Kitase, who also directed 1997’s original game, said Rebirth would be “released next winter”, meaning in late 2023 or early 2024.
“Development is progressing smoothly and according to plan,” he said in an update on Friday. “We are currently working on nailing down a release date for the game.”
When FF7 Rebirth was announced, Kitase claimed development of the game was “proceeding at an astonishingly fast pace for such a large-scale HD title.”
He added: “Making the middle part of a trilogy has its own challenges, but there are plenty of classic second instalments in the world of film that are defined by stunning story twists and deeper explorations of their characters. Often these second instalments become a favourite amongst the fans.”
Creative director Tetsuya Nomura also said the sequel was being designed so that people can enjoy it whether they know the original game or not.
“In fact, new players might even enjoy starting their Final Fantasy VII journey with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,” he said. “Cloud and his friends embark on a new journey in this game, and I believe that the scenes that they witness after leaving Midgar will give players a fresh, new experience.”
Unlike its predecessor Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which was released for PS4 in 2020 before making its way to PS5 and PC the following year, Rebirth won’t be available for Sony’s last-gen console.
The next mainline entry in the series, Final Fantasy 16, will be released for PS5 on June 22.
