Square Enix has to pull an iOS Final Fantasy game because it can’t fix a DLC bug
Players couldn’t access paid content in Crystal Chronicles Remastered, including the full game unlock
Square Enix has said it had to pull a Final Fantasy game from the iOS App Store because it couldn’t fix a critical DLC bug.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered was released on PS4, Switch, iOS and Android in August 2020, offering an updated version of the 2003 GameCube game.
However, according to Square Enix, “changes made to the in-app purchases model” means players who bought DLC content in the iOS version of the game can no longer access it.
This would be an annoyance in itself were the DLC limited to in-game items such as cosmetic items or extra modes, but because the iOS version is a free app with the full game unlocked via an in-app purchase, this means everyone is now locked out of the full game on Apple devices.
In a statement made on the official Final Fantasy website, Square Enix said it is “unable to completely fix the bug and implement the new changes, making it unlikely to resume service for the game”.
“Thus,” it said, “we must regretfully announce that we will end support for the iOS version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles”.
Players who made any in-app purchases (including the Full Version unlock) in January 2024 or later are eligible for refunds, Square Enix says, but anyone who paid for the game before this will not.
The PS4, Switch and Android versions of the game will continue to run as usual, with Square Enix stressing that this issue is specific to the iOS version.
