Spider-Man the ‘best-selling superhero game’ in US history

Insomniac’s Spider-Man has overtaken Batman: Arkham City to become the best-selling superhero game in US history.

That’s according to Mat Piscatella, an analyst at market research firm the NPD Group, who tweeted the following list of the top ten superhero games based on dollar sales as of May 2019.

Spider-Man’s position at the top of the chart is made more significant given its both the most recently released game on the list and a platform exclusive.

In contrast, 2011’s Batman: Arkham City has been released on various platforms spanning multiple console generations.

Released in September 2018, PS4 exclusive Spider-Man was widely praised by critics and had sold nine million units worldwide as of November 2018, according to publisher Sony.

On Thursday, the NPD Group released its latest monthly sales data for the US market. Nintendo Switch continued to lead US hardware sales in June, while the console’s newest first-party exclusive Super Mario Maker 2 took the top spot on the monthly software chart.

Piscatella said in May he expects Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to be the No.1 game in the US in 2019 based on dollar sales.
