Sony says transferring PS4 saves to PS5 ‘is a developer decision and will vary title by title’
Company explains how PS4 game transfers and game saves work between the two consoles
Sony has said that transferring PS4 saves to the PS5 version of the same game is down to individual developers meaning the ability to do so will vary title by title.
Insomniac Games recently confirmed that Spider-Man Miles Morales saves will be transferable from PS4 to PS5.
However, cross-generational saves won’t be supported between the PS4 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man and its PS5 remaster.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon saves also won’t be transferable between PS4 and PS5, and nor will Dirt 5 saves.
“Please note that the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games,” Sony said in a PlayStation Blog post on Friday.
It also confirmed that Sackboy: A Big Adventure will introduce game save transfers from PS4 to PS5 via a post-launch update.
Sony explained more generally how PS4 game transfers and game saves work between the two consoles too.
“You can transfer digital games, game data, and game saves from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using LAN cables, or by connecting wirelessly (WiFi),” it said.
“If you’ve already stored PS4 games and game data in the external USB storage device connected to your PS4, you can bring them over to PS5 with that external USB storage device. And if you are a PS Plus member, you can also sync PS4 game saves on PS5 through cloud storage.”
As expected, players who buy the PS5 Digital Edition console will be able to access PS4 software previously purchased digitally, but they won’t be able to play disc-based games on the new hardware.
Players who buy the standard PS5 console will be able to play previously purchased physical and digital PS4 games on the new console.
Both consoles support Remote Play from PS4 to PS5 and PlayStation Now streaming.
A list of 10 PS4 games which are not playable on PS5 was revealed earlier on Friday.
While Sony said “the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles,” it warned that “some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles” and “some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior” when played on the next-gen system.
Some PS4 games will benefit from the PS5 Game Boost feature. Sony said select titles “with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features”.
Ghost of Tsushima will utilise PS5’s Game Boost feature to support frame rates up to 60fps.
The PlayStation 5 release date is November 12 in the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia and South Korea. The rest of the world will get the console a week later on November 19.
