Sony reportedly might not hold a full PS5 summer showcase this year
PlayStation is considering publishing a smaller State of Play instead, it’s claimed
Sony reportedly hasn’t decided whether to hold its annual PS5 showcase this summer, or a smaller scale State of Play.
According to Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb, Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently debating internally between the two models, the latter of which typically focuses more on third-party games and smaller announcements.
“They could still have some fun announcements and they could still start bolstering expectations for 2026,” Grubb said, of Sony’s marketing plans for the rest of the year.
“Internally it sounds like they’re debating, and flopping between, maybe making something this summer a full showcase versus another State of Play. But they are considering a showcase.
“And if they have a showcase, that means they’ll have a lot of stuff to talk about. And at that point, you would definitely expect to see Wolverine and a lot of other games that could come out next year.”
PlayStation’s last ‘showcase’ event was in 2023, when it announced multiple games for PS5 and PSVR2, including Metal Gear Solid Delta, and extensive looks at Spider-Man 2, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and more.
Earlier this week, Sony premiered its latest State of Play live stream, which focused mostly on third-party games such as Borderlands 4 and Split Fiction, but did end with the surprise reveal of Housemarque’s new IP, Saros.
It’s been a significant week for Sony, as the company also published its latest financial results, which included news that PS5 enjoyed its best-ever holiday period in 2024 and has now cleared 75 million units shipped.
Launch-aligned, PlayStation 5 is now just 1.5 million units behind PlayStation 4 during the same period of its lifecycle (76.5 million units).
