Sony quietly updates PS5 free game offer to clarify it’s ‘invitation only’
The platform holder recently launched the promotion for those yet to purchase a PS5
Sony has quietly updated the terms of a free game promotion to make it clear that only invited users can redeem the offer.
The promotion first appeared last month, offering some new PlayStation 5 users in the US a free game. According to the terms of the offer, it was “valid only in the U.S. for eligible PSN account holders who are at least 18 years of age and purchase and activate a new PS5 console by October 20, 2023 @ 23:59pm (PDT)”.
However, social media users have since spotted that Sony has updated the terms of the promotion, to clarify that it’s “by invitation only”, meaning it won’t necessarily be available to all.
Those invited to redeem the offer can choose to claim one of the following 12 games, which must be redeemed by the same date and time listed above. The games are:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered
- God of War Ragnarök
- Horizon Forbidden West
- Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Demon’s Souls
- The Last of Us Part I
- Sackboy: A Big Adventure
- Returnal
- Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection
- Death Stranding: Director’s Cut
Sony said in July that PS5 sales had topped 40 million worldwide. PS4 remains its fastest-selling console to reach the milestone, having hit 40 million sales two months sooner, but it didn’t face the same Covid-related supply issues that checked PS5’s momentum.
Sony is aiming to ship 25 million PS5 consoles during its current fiscal year ending in March 2024. If achieved, it would beat a 25-year-old console sales record set when the original PlayStation shipped 22.6 million units over a 12-month period.
