Sony officially unveils PlayStation 5 Pro, releasing in November for $700/£700

Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro.

The new console will be released on November 7 for $700 / £700 / €800. It will include a 2TB SSD, and a DualSense wireless controller, but a disc drive will need to be purchased seperately.

Revealed during a live stream hosted by system architect Mark Cerny on Tuesday, the system introduces a larger GPU, advanced ray tracing, and AI-driven upscaling for new and existing titles.

According to Sony, PS5 Pro has a GPU with 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. What this means is that, overall, PS5 Pro has 45% faster rendering for gameplay, “making the experience much smoother”.

Meanwhile, Advanced ray tracing allows in-game light rays to be cast at “double, and at times triple”, the speeds of the current PS5 console.

Finally, PS5 Pro introduces PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide sharper image clarity, according to Sony.

Other enhancements include PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can apply to more than 8,500 backwards compatible PS4 games playable on PS5 Pro. “This feature may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games,” Sony said. “Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is also available to improve the resolution on select PS4 games.”

“We developed PS5 Pro with deeply engaged players and game creators in mind – as many have asked for a console that runs even higher fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment business CEO, Hideaki Nishino.

“It’s humbling to see how game creators have embraced the latest technology from PS5 Pro, and several games will be patched with free software updates for gamers to take advantage of PS5 Pro’s features. These games can be identified with a PS5 Pro Enhanced label within their title.”

PS5 Pro features a design consistent with the overall PS5 family of products, according to Sony, with the same height as the original PS5, and the same width as the newer, refreshed PS5 model.

Games with PS5 Pro enhancements include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.

Mark Cerny detailed some of the specific upgrades that will come to PS5 Pro games during Tuesday’s live stream. For example, Horizon Forbidden West will now run at 4K at 60FPS. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will target “a super smooth 60 frames per second.”

“Our PS5 journey would not be possible without the millions of players that have supported us through the years and have shared with us their love of gaming,” said Nishino. “Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.”
