Sony is releasing the PS5 Pulse 3D Wireless Headset in Midnight Black
The new all-black design is coming in October
Sony has announced that it’s releasing a special Midnight Black version of its Pulse 3D Wireless Headset.
The PS5 headset has only been available in white since launch, but Sony has now confirmed that the new black model will be coming in October.
The Midnight Black colour consists of “two subtly different shades of black” according to Sony, and is designed to tie in with the Midnight Black PS5 DualSense controller which was released in June.
The Pulse 3D headset is designed to take full advantage of the console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, which helps players place sounds to their exact locations while playing.
Sony also confirmed that today’s PS5 system update adds a new equalizer control feature for Pulse 3D headsets.
The equalizer includes three presets – Standard, Bass Boost and Shooter – which were originally featured in the PS4 headset companion app and are now being carried over to the PS5.
Users can create their own presets and save up to three of them so they can switch between them for different games.
Speaking during a PS5 hardware presentation last year, system architect Mark Cerny explained how PS5’s 3D audio works.
Tempest Engine operates via a table called the Head-related Transfer Function (HRTF). Each person’s HRTF is unique to them and determines how they hear sound.
Sony has modelled HRTFs for around a hundred people and has come up with five presets for PS5’s launch, allowing players to choose the best selection for their ears.
