Sony is currently testing PlayStation VR2 compatibility with PC

Sony has confirmed that it’s currently testing PlayStation VR2 compatibility with PC.

The company aims to enable players to connect their PS VR2 headsets to PCs later this year in order to access more games.

“We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5”, it said on the PlayStation Blog.

“We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.”

The blog post also covered a number of PS VR2 game announcements, including the reveal of Rebellion’s Zombies Army VR, which will be released later this year.

PS5’s virtual reality headset launched in February 2023 for $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 and sales reportedly got off to a slow start.

The following month, Sony president and soon to be interim PlayStation CEO Hiroki Totoki said he thought PS VR2 had a “good chance” of outselling its predecessor, which launched for PS4 in October 2016 and sold over five million units.

In October, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s senior vice president and head of global marketing, Eric Lempel, described VR as a meaningful business for the company, but one that was yet to reach its’s potential.

“The VR category is important to us. It’s a category that can help us with innovation,” he said. “It’s never going to be the only way people play games, but I’m happy that we’re in it. There are great experiences to be had and consumers really like it. But it’s a nascent business for us.”

And in December, Lempel told the Financial Times that VR “is a bit of a challenging category right now”, despite Sony’s own sales reportedly “going well”.

While he said Sony remained committed to VR products, he added: “I think there was a higher expectation generally for what VR would do to gaming.”
