Sony has removed the 8K claim from PlayStation 5 boxes
The company has updated its packaging to reflect a lack of support for the resolution
Sony Interactive Entertainment has quietly updated its PlayStation 5 packaging to remove mention of 8K support.
It’s unclear precisely when the new packaging was rolled out, but the company launched the PS5 Slim model last November with 8K still emblazoned on the product’s box (pictured above).
While retailers like Amazon and Walmart are still listing PS5 consoles with the old packaging, none of the various PS5 boxes pictured on Sony’s PlayStation Direct store still carry the 8K claim.
So they apparently removed the 8K from the box on PS5s? Ha ha, that’s pretty funny and should have been done years ago. It’s pretty obvious that not only is 8K not suitable for these machines (aside from The Touryst) but 8K displays are not desirable. I wouldn’t want one. pic.twitter.com/XgFpPx0FWi

Sony started branding TVs that support 8K and 120 fps as “PS5 ready” as early as July 2020.
“PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software,” Sony said prior to the console’s launch in November 2020.
PS5 officially received its first ever 8K 60fps game, The Touryst, in October 2021, but Sony never activated 8K output on the console with a system update as originally planned.
It was recently claimed that Sony is planning to release a PS5 Pro console in late 2024, and that it will feature a proprietary DLSS-like solution.
