Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie set for April 2022 release
Original set a record opening for a video game film
Paramount Pictures has announced plans to release Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in cinemas on April 8, 2022.
The first Sonic The Hedgehog film enjoyed a record opening for a video game movie following its February 2020 release.
The live action film sees Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and his best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to save the planet from evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
It went on to gross $146 million in the US and $306 million worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing film of 2020, according to Box Office Mojo.
However, its run at cinemas was cut short when venues were shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following the closures, Paramount chose to release Sonic the Hedgehog digitally on March 31, little more than 40 days after it debuted in cinemas on Valentine’s Day.
Variety reported in May that Jeff Fowler is returning to direct the sequel, and reteaming with the first film’s scriptwriters, Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
The co-creators of Sonic the Hedgehog announced new action game Balan Wonderworld on Thursday.
