Paramount ‘greenlights’ Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie
Writers and director reportedly returning
Paramount Pictures and Sega have reportedly greenlit a sequel to their live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
According to Variety, the follow-up will see Jeff Fowler return to direct, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller again write the script for the film.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is still in the development stage, Variety reports, so decisions have not been made yet regarding casting or a production start date.
The Sonic movie has performed above expectations and amassed $146 million in the US and $306 million worldwide.
In its first weekend, the Paramount film debuted with a three-day opening of $57 million in the US, which represents a new domestic record for a video game adaptation.
In addition, the Sonic movie’s four-day gross of $70 million is among the best showings ever for the long holiday weekend, which this year coincided with Valentine’s Day.
With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 63% and an audience score in the 90s, Sonic seems to have fared far better with moviegoers than with critics.
