Confirmed: Sonic Origins is out in June with new areas, mission mode and more

A listing for Sonic Origins has appeared on the Australia and New Zealand PlayStation Store, revealing new information on the upcoming compilation.

The listing, which appears to have gone up early, can be accessed via an Australian or New Zealand PlayStation account.

The product description reveals that each of the classic retro Sonic games included will have brand new opening and ending animations, and will include Classic and Anniversary modes.

UPDATE: Sega has officially announced Sonic Origins and confirmed a June release date.

ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: The Classic mode will show the game in its original resolution and have limited lives like it did in the 16-bit era.

The Anniversary mode, meanwhile, will give the player infinite lives and will present the game in a new widescreen resolution.

Origins will also include missions, which will allow players to collect coins. These can then be spent in the game’s Museum mode, to unlock new content, challenges and Special Stages.

The listing on the PlayStation app also appears to imply that a physical release is planned, as it makes reference to owners of a PS4 disc being able to upgrade to the PS5 version.

Sonic Origins is a retro compilation which includes the following games:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Sonic CD
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3
  • Sonic & Knuckles

The compilation was originally announced in May 2021 during Sega‘s Sonic Central presentation, but new information had been thin on the ground until this week, when the game was given a rating in South Korea.

Confirmed: Sonic Origins is out in June with new areas, mission mode and more

In an interview last year with Japanese website 4Gamer, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka confirmed that the games in Sonic Origins wouldn’t be running on an emulator, but would instead be completely new ports.

This would allow the games to be presented in 16:9 widescreen and have other tweaks and modifications, similar to the critically acclaimed mobile ports released by Christian Whitehead (who would go on to work on Sonic Mania).
