Sega’s Company of Heroes 2 is free to keep on Steam this weekend

Sega has made its 2013 real-time strategy game Company of Heroes 2 and one of its major expansions free to download and keep on Steam for a limited time.

Both the main Company of Heroes 2 game and its Ardennes Assault single-player campaign are free on Steam until May 31.

If players ‘buy’ both games as a bundle before that date, they will be free to keep forever.

Sega also has a wider Company of Heroes sale on Steam in which players can buy the other Company of Heroes games and DLC for up to 80% off until June 3.

Company of Heroes 2 was originally released in 2013 and is the sequel to the 2006 original.

Developed by Relic Entertainment, the game is an RTS set during World War II and has players controlling the Soviet Red Army on the Eastern Front.

The game was well-received at launch, scoring an average of 80 on Metacritic, although some reviewers pointed out that it may not be entirely historically accurate.

Its Ardennes Assault DLC adds a new single-player campaign featuring the American Armed Forces.

The game was originally due to be published by THQ, but when it filed for bankruptcy in late 2012 Sega acquired both Relic and the Company of Heroes IP.

Company of Heroes 2 was banned in Russia after an online petition by Russian players complained about the way the Red Army was portrayed as cold-blooded and cruel.
