Ridge Racer 64 is now on Switch Online, marking its first ever re-release
The first non-PlayStation Ridge Racer is now available on the N64 app on Switch
Ridge Racer 64 is the latest game to be added to the Nintendo 64 collection on Switch Online.
The game marked the series’ Nintendo debut, making it the first Ridge Racer title to not be released in arcades or on the PlayStation.
While the series was usually handled by Namco, Ridge Racer 64 was instead developed by Nintendo’s US-based studio Nintendo Software Technology, which made its own take on Ridge Racer with Namco’s assistance.
The resulting game is a sort of ‘best of’ Ridge Racer, featuring 10 courses taking place over four environments including tracks from Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution.
Players start with four cars but can eventually unlock up to 32, ranging from a golf cart to the powerful Ultra 64 car.
The addition of Ridge Racer 64 brings the total number of N64 games available on Switch Online to 38 in the West, meaning exactly an eighth of the console’s library is now available on the service.
Recent additions have included Banjo-Tooie and a new Mature 17+ version of the app, including games with higher age ratings like Perfect Dark, Turko, Turok 2 and Shadow Man.
NES, SNES, Game Boy and Game Boy Colour games are available as part of the standard Switch Online subscription, which costs £3.49/€3.99/$3.99 for a one-month membership, £6.99/€7.99/$7.99 for a three-month membership, and £17.99/€19.99/$19.99 for a 12-month membership.
Switch Online’s Expansion Pack add-on, which is needed to play Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Sega Mega Drive / Genesis games, costs $49.99 / £34.99 / €39.99 per year.
