Resident Evil Village’s PS5 demo is out today as Capcom confirms last-gen and new multiplayer game

Capcom has announced that Resident Evil Village will be released for last-gen consoles as well as current-gen systems and PC when it arrives later this year.

The game’s May 7, 2021 release date was confirmed during a special Resident Evil Showcase event on Thursday.

Producer Peter Fabiano confirmed that players will be able to upgrade the PS4 version of the game to the digital PS5 version for free.

Resident Evil Village is in development for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One too. It will launch on all platforms simultaneously, according to its latest trailer, which can be viewed below.

Capcom also used Thursday’s showcase to announce a PS5 exclusive Resident Evil Village demo which sees players taking on the role of a character called the Maiden as she attempts to escape from Dimitrescu Castle.

The demo, which doesn’t feature combat or blocking, is available to download today, with a separate, new demo for all platforms set to launch this spring.

“Maiden is a demo that’s separate from Resident Evil Village,” Fabiano told PlayStation Blog. “However, it does take place in the same world as RE Village does.

“When you play Resident Evil Village, or, perhaps, you come back to Maiden after playing the main game, you might discover the connections they have to each other.”

Also speaking during Thursday’s showcase, fellow Resident Evil Village producer Tsuyoshi Kanda confirmed that the recently leaked Resident Evil Re:Verse multiplayer game (pictured below) will be the subject of a closed beta test on PS4 and Xbox One from January 27-29.

“This online multiplayer title was created as a thank you to fans for the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil series,” reads the official blurb accompanying the Re:Verse reveal trailer. “Available for free to purchasers of Resident Evil Village, it features beloved Resident Evil characters as they clash in six-person deathmatches!”

Re:Verse is an online-only multiplayer title which requires a PlayStation Plus membership or an Xbox Live Gold membership to play. Players have until January 25 to register for a chance to gain access to the closed beta.
