PSN is down as Sony says it is investigating the outage

PSN has suffered a major outage overnight. Sony has said it is aware of the issues and is investigating.

The outage, which began on Friday, saw the PlayStation Network, PlayStation Store, and the PlayStation Portal all experience issues. While the outage appears to be wide-reaching, some users have reported that they experienced no issues.

While Sony has acknowledged the issues, it has yet to provide a timeframe for when the services will return to normal or commented on why the services have been impacted.

According to DownDetector, which registers user complaints about online services, there is a large spike in complaints at 11 PM UK time on Friday night.

While online service outages are fairly common, one large issue arising from this PSN outage is that due to the way that game licenses are handled on the platform, players with digital copies of their games have found that they are unable to play their games.

While some digital titles will launch, PlayStation will then warn players that the game will close after 15 minutes due to being unable to verify the license for the game.

PlayStation will reportedly hold a State of Play presentation soon. It’s expected to feature Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, due to a release trailer for the game being temporarily uploaded to the PlayStation Network early.
