PS5’s first new DualSense colours are Cosmic Red and Midnight Black
The new space-themed colours will be released next month
Sony has revealed two new controller colours for the PlayStation 5‘s DualSense.
Until now, the controller has only been available in its standard black and white design, but the two new colours will be released next month, with the specific date differing depending on the country, according to the official PlayStation Blog.
The colours are Midnight Black and Cosmic Red, and each is inspired by views of space, according to Sony.
“Midnight Black features two subtly different shades of black with light grey detailing to reflect how we view space through the night sky,” Sony said.
Cosmic Red, meanwhile, “offers a striking black and red design inspired by the unique vivid shades of red found throughout the cosmos”.
“We wanted the new controller colours to complement each other, as well as the original DualSense wireless controller and PS5 console, so we designed the colours around the theme of ‘galaxy’ as it felt like a natural progression from the original PS5 and accessories designs”, said Leo Cardoso from Sony’s design team.
“Both Midnight Black and Cosmic Red feature a subtle blue hue, that produces unique shades of red and black,” adds the design team’s Satoshi Aoyagi.
“A blue hue is also present in the original DualSense wireless controller colours, so all three colours complement each other nicely. The controller’s button colours and detailing has been tailored to complement the new colours as well.”
These are the first alternate colour designs for the PS5 controller. The Xbox Series X and S already launched with Robot White, Carbon Black and Shock Blue options, while a Shock Red colour was released in February and Electric Volt and Daystrike Camo launched on April 27 and May 4 respectively.
