PS5 is the fastest-selling hardware platform in US history, NPD Group reports
But Nintendo Switch and Super Mario 3D World were February’s top sellers
PlayStation 5 is currently the fastest selling video game hardware platform in US history, according to market research firm NPD Group.
That’s based on dollar sales generated by Sony’s console after four months of availability, NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said on Friday.
However, the supply constrained PS5 was only the second best-selling hardware platform in February, trailing Nintendo Switch in both unit and dollar sales.
Nintendo’s system has now been the best-selling console in the US for a record 27 consecutive months based on units sold.
NPD said Switch’s lifetime dollar sales have now surpassed those of the DS, making it Nintendo’s second best-selling platform behind Wii, and the seventh best-selling platform overall in US tracked history.
Nintendo doesn’t provide digital sales data, but February’s best-selling game was Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury based on boxed sales alone. It’s also 2021’s second best-selling game behind Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Activision’s shooter dropped to No.2 on February’s software chart, followed by new entry Persona 5: Strikers, Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales and Madden NFL 21. The only other new entry in the top 20 was Little Nightmares 2 at No.6.
Total consumer spending on video game hardware, content and accessories last month hit a February record $4.6 billion, with year-to-date spending up 39 percent compared to 2020.
