PS5 had a 51% share of all UK console sales over the last 6 months
Switch sales came in slightly ahead of Xbox Series X/S sales during the same period
PlayStation 5 has been dominating UK console sales over the past year, and in particular the last six months.
According to GfK data published on GamesIndustry.biz, PS5 accounted for 43% of total console sales over the 12 months ended in October 2023.
And in the past six months, PS5 accounted for over half (51%) of all UK console sales.
“Recent PS5 highlights coming from unrestricted sales on the standard PS5 hardware model, aggressive price promotions in July and August, and the recent EA Sports FC 24 bundle,” said GfK games boss Dorian Bloch.
“Over the same measures the Xbox Series consoles have dropped from 26% market share over the last 12 months to 23% over the last 6 months, but the biggest decline has been Switch, down from 34% to 25%.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) launched its new PS5 ‘Slim’ console in the US this week, ahead of its global rollout over the coming months.
The console is yet to receive a launch date in the UK, where Sony has regularly been cutting PS5 hardware prices since the summer.
SIE senior vice president and head of global marketing Eric Lempel said in a recent interview that this will be the first Christmas shopping season that anyone who wants to buy a PS5 will be able to find one.
“Our outlook on PlayStation 5 is really strong,” he told Barron’s. “We’re expecting one of the strongest seasons in our history in terms of console sales.”
Sony is aiming to ship 25 million PS5 consoles during its current fiscal year ending in March 2024. If achieved, it would beat a 25-year-old console sales record set when the original PlayStation shipped 22.6 million units over a 12-month period.
