PS5 has ended Switch’s 33-month reign as the best-selling console in the US
While Madden NFL 22 held off a string of new releases to top the monthly software chart
PlayStation 5 has ended Nintendo Switch’s long-running streak as the US market’s best-selling console.
Prior to September, Nintendo’s system was the best-selling console in the US for a record 33 consecutive months based on units sold.
But PS5 took the crown in both unit and dollar sales last month after Sony was able to make “a big number” of the supply constrained console available to consumers, NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said on Monday.
The market research company said consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories was up three percent compared to a year earlier, hitting a September record $4.4 billion.
Year to date spending reached $42.3 billion, representing a 12 percent increase compared to the first nine months of 2020.

On the software front, Madden NFL 22 topped September’s sales chart ahead of five new releases: FIFA 22, NBA 2K22, Tales of Arise, Diablo II: Resurrected and Deathloop.
The other new entries to crack the monthly top 20 were Life is Strange: True Colors at No.10, Diablo Prime Evil Collection at No.12, Sonic Colors Ultimate at No.13, and WarioWare: Get It Together a No.15.
US-based consumers hoping to purchase a PS5 console can now register their interest directly with Sony for a chance to do so.
The company is making a limited number of PS5 consoles available for customers in the US to purchase directly from PlayStation this holiday season.
