PS5 and Xbox Series X are reportedly going on sale at Best Buy stores for the first time in 2021
UPDATE: Flagship locations will offer the consoles physically on September 23
Best Buy is reportedly preparing to sell PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles in stores for the first time this year.
According to internal inventory screens shared with TechRadar, the retailer will have a limited number of both consoles available for purchase physically this Thursday, September 23.
A select number of Best Buy stores are expected to have over 50 of each console available, with many more likely to be on sale at outlets in major metropolitan areas.
UPDATE 22/09/21: Best Buy has confirmed that it will be selling PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles in stores on September 23.
ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: While the method of selling the consoles has yet to be confirmed, it’s claimed the sales process is expected to work similarly to how Best Buy restocked Nvidia GPU cards this summer.
If this proves to be correct, Best Buy managers will distribute paper tickets to queuing customers from 7am-7:30am local time, ahead of store openings.
Some consoles may also be sold online with Best Buy offering same-day pickup either at the storefront or curbside.
VGC has contacted Best Buy for comment on this report.
Sony claimed in July that PS5 had become its fastest selling console ever after topping 10 million sales globally.
Xbox Series X/S at retail
The console reached the milestone in mid-July, about eight months after its November 2020 launch, and just under a month faster than the PS4 managed.
Microsoft also claimed in July that Xbox Series X/S, which launched in November 2020 too, are the company’s fastest selling consoles ever.
“The Xbox Series S and X are our fastest selling consoles ever with more consoles sold life to date than any previous generation,” said CEO Satya Nadella.
