PlayStation Stars is now live in North and South America
The new loyalty program, which debuted in Asia last month and will be rolled out in Europe on October 13, lets players earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities.
It has a four-tier level system, in which all players start at Level 1 and can work their way up to Level 4 by buying games and earning trophies.
While the service allows players to earn digital collectables, Sony has been firm in its assertion that these aren’t tradeable, nor are they sellable. This appears to be an effort to differentiate them from NFTs, which have proved controversial in the gaming space.
Controversially, the service appears to offer high-tier users priority customer support, which has been received poorly by players in regions where the service has already launched.
According to Sony, the Level 4 tier perks include a commemorative collectible, and a promise that “when contacting PlayStation Customer Support, you will be given priority in the chat order”.
Last week, a hidden fifth tier of PlayStation Stars membership was reportedly found in the PlayStation mobile app.
